Exercise is recognized as a critical component in the treatment of Parkinson ’s disease. It is the only thing known to slow disease progression.
The Torrington Area Parkinson’s Support Group, in conjunction with Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and the Hartford Healthcare Rehabilitation Network, supports an exercise program for its members called “Keep It Movin”.
The program consists of 6 week sessions with two meetings a week. A referral from a physician is required to join the program. A physical therapy evaluation is done prior to joining the group and is conducted every six months. The program is specifically designed for Parkinson’s individuals and follows LSVT BIG and POWER Moves concepts. (Both LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD programs are available at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Rehabilitation Services.
For more information on these programs please contact the hospital directly.)
While the exercise program is important, a side benefit to the group exercises is the camaraderie that the participants develop.
